What ID do I need to buy cannabis at a Michigan cannabis retailer?

You must be 21 or older to buy adult-use cannabis in Michigan, and you’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth — a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. Michigan retailers are required to verify age before every adult-use sale. You do not need to be a Michigan resident, so visitors from out of state are welcome as long as they meet the same age and ID requirements.

Do I need a medical marijuana card to shop at Fire Island?

No. Fire Island is a licensed adult-use recreational cannabis retailer, so any adult 21 or older can shop with us without a Michigan medical marijuana card. All you need is valid government-issued photo identification showing you are 21 or older.

Where is Fire Island located, and what are your hours?

Fire Island is at 5957 N. State Road, Alma, MI 48801, serving Alma, Gratiot County, and the surrounding Mid-Michigan communities including St. Louis, Breckenridge, Riverdale, Vestaburg, Ithaca, Middleton, Perrinton, Rainbow Lake, St. Johns, Mt. Pleasant, and Clare. We’re open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hours can change around holidays, so check our website before you visit.

What if I’m new to cannabis and don’t know what to buy?

That’s completely fine, and it’s a big part of what our team does. Tell your budtender how much experience you have and what you’re hoping to get out of it, and they’ll walk you through the differences between flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, concentrates, tinctures, and beverages. If you’re starting with edibles, begin low — 2.5 to 5mg of THC — and wait a full two hours before taking more, since edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect.

Michigan Cannabis Laws

Is recreational cannabis legal in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan voters legalized adult-use cannabis in 2018 through the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA), for adults 21 and older. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency licenses and oversees the state’s adult-use cannabis retailers. Fire Island is a licensed Michigan adult-use cannabis retailer and was Gratiot County’s first family-owned recreational cannabis store.

How much cannabis can I buy at once in Michigan, and how much can I keep at home?

A Michigan adult-use retailer cannot sell more than 2.5 ounces of cannabis in a single transaction, and no more than 15 grams of that may be concentrate. You may carry up to 2.5 ounces in public. At home you may keep up to 10 ounces, but any amount over 2.5 ounces has to be secured in a locked container — a lockbox, safe, or locked cabinet, not a drawer or a jar on a shelf.

Can I grow cannabis at home in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan allows adults 21 and older to grow up to 12 cannabis plants per household, regardless of how many adults live there. The plants must be kept in an enclosed, locked area that isn’t visible from a public place. Home-grown cannabis is for personal use and cannot be sold.

Where can I legally consume cannabis in Michigan?

Michigan does not permit cannabis consumption in public places, and consuming in public is a civil infraction carrying a fine. Property owners, including landlords and hotels, can prohibit cannabis use on their property. Michigan does license separate designated consumption establishments, but buying from a retailer does not allow you to consume on site — you cannot use cannabis inside Fire Island. Plan to consume at a private residence where it is permitted.

Can I drive after using cannabis, or have cannabis in my car in Michigan?

Never drive after consuming cannabis. Michigan’s adult-use law does not authorize operating a vehicle or machinery while under the influence, and driving impaired carries criminal penalties. When transporting cannabis, it’s best to keep it sealed in its original packaging and store it somewhere not readily accessible from the passenger area. Michigan sets storage requirements for usable medical marihuana carried in a vehicle (MCL 750.474), and while Michigan’s adult-use law does not specifically address how cannabis should be transported by a consumer, keeping it out of the passenger compartment is the safest way to stay compliant.
